Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia Surgery)
Timeless Plastic Surgery offers male breast reduction surgery for our patients in Houston, Sugar Land, and the Fort Bend county areas. We have some of the most qualified and experienced plastic surgeons in the Houston area.
“Gynecomastia” is the medical term for male breast enlargement, which literally means “woman’s breast.” Although this condition is more common in elderly males, it afflicts men of all ages. In fact, it is estimated that up to 60 percent of men may be affected with gynecomastia.
Many men find this condition embarrassing and will try to hide it by wearing heavy clothing and avoiding activities that require public exposure. Younger males are often teased about their condition with slurs such as “man boobs.”
Newer technology has reduced much of the scarring associated with male breast reduction surgery, which was highly visible in the past. Today, a number of smaller incisions can be made around the nipple area – which not only improves the cosmetic outcome, but also helps in recovery time as well.
Male Breast Reduction Procedure:
During gynecomastia surgery, fat and glandular tissue are removed from the affected area. In extreme cases, excess skin may also be removed.
Are you a Candidate for Male Breast Reduction?
If you have tried all other possible solutions, including diet and exercise, male breast reduction surgery may be the only solution.
Candidates for male breast reduction surgery can be of any age, but they should be healthy and emotionally stable.
What are the risks of Male Breast Reduction Surgery?
Male breast reduction surgery has many of the same risks of any surgical procedure, including infection, blood loss, etc. In addition, you should be careful to choose the right surgeon to carry out the procedure. The surgeon should be well-qualified and experienced because it requires the surgeon to carefully sculpt each breast area to ensure symmetry of the chest area. Timeless Plastic Surgery has is highly-qualified and experienced surgeons who perform male breast reduction surgery. We will explain the risks and describe what you may expect after the operation.
How long is the recovery from Male Breast Reduction Surgery?
Patients will experience swelling, bruising, and some discomfort for a few days after the male breast reduction surgery, but prescribed medication can alleviate these symptoms.
To reduce swelling, you will wear an elastic bandage, continuously at first and then during sleeping hours. The length of time you must wear the bandage depends on your speed of your recovery, which is normally for just a few weeks.
Each patient is different, and depending upon the extent of your male breast reduction procedure, it may take a few months for complete recovery and the full benefits of the operation to be noticeable.
Although you will be encouraged to be active, you should avoid heavy exercise and weight lifting for several weeks. Patients can normally return to work after a day or two. We will provide complete instructions to help you heal and quickly return to normal.
If you are like almost 60 percent of men who feel that your overall appearance can be enhanced by male breast reduction, please do not hesitate to schedule a consultation at Timeless Plastic Surgery. While not all men are ideal candidates (due to obesity, excessive alcohol use, drug use – including steroids, or heavy smoking), we can certainly discuss if male breast reduction surgery is right for you.
Please note that drug-related male breast enlargement (gynecomastia) due to steroid or marijuana use can sometimes be recurring, even after gynecomastia surgery. Please ask your surgeon whether this applies to you during your consultation.
We perform male breast reduction on an outpatient basis, but you should be sure to arrange for someone to drive you home after the procedure and help you during the first few days of recovery.
